Woman chokes day-old baby to death

A 23-year-old Harare woman allegedly choked her day-old baby to death before dumping the body at an illegal dumpsite.

Nancy Chitsiga was remanded in custody when she appeared before Harare magistrate Apollonia Marutya facing infanticide charges.

According to the State, on July 26 this year, Chitsiga went into labour and gave birth at home.

State prosecutor Thomas Chanakira alleged that Chitsiga choked the new-born to death, wrapped the body in plastic and placed it in a bin.

Chitsiga allegedly later dumped the baby at an illegal dumpsite.

Two teenage boys  discovered the body  at the dumping site after they tried to burn litter.
