‘Insurance companies not compensating accident victims’

There are several cases where accident victims have been left to foot their own medical bills with no support from insurance companies.

FORMER Zanu PF Chegutu West lawmaker, Dexter Nduna, has threatened legal action against insurance companies for failing to compensate accident victims.

There are several cases where accident victims have been left to foot their own medical bills with no support from insurance companies.

“Passenger insurance is US$15 per seat, if it’s a bus that has 75 seats, it forks up about US$4 000 per quarter to the insurance sector,” Nduna said in an interview.

“So you will find that the passenger insurance covers about US$40 000 for the bereaved expenses and for the family of the bereaved. If someone is injured, they have to get a compensation of about US$4 000 for medical expenses.

“But it's not happening. You find that if a bus overturns, the insurance players go underground immediately. “

Nduna said the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe must be taken to task to ensure that accident victims are compensated.

“None of the insurance companies come forth to pay for the calamities. It’s a pity. So I am taking the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe to court and its affiliates,” Nduna said.

Insurance Council of Zimbabwe marketing manager Ringisayi Batiya yesterday said she could not comment on the matter as she was not at work.

“Unfortunately we can only respond to those questions during the week. You can send the questions on our email,” Batiya said.

According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, 13 552 road traffic accidents were reported during 4th quarter 2023 resulting in 553 deaths and 2 663 injuries.

The figures represent a 7,9% increase in traffic accidents recorded in the third quarter of 2023.

According to a World of Statistics report released last year, 41 deaths per every 100 000 people die in road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe.
