The Lady Students’ win saw them leap into first place on 24 points having played eight games so far in the season.

HERENTALS Queens opened a three-point lead in the Zimbabwe Women Soccer League (ZWSL) following their 2-0 win over Black Mambas Queens at the National Sports B Arena in Harare on Saturday, while Black Rhinos suffered their first defeat on the same day away to Chapungu Queens at Manyame Airbase.

Melody Mafuruse’s first-half brace was all Herentals needed to see off Black Mambas as she found the net in the third minute and her second at the stroke of halftime.

The Lady Students’ win saw them leap into first place on 24 points having played eight games so far in the season.

Airforce side Chapungu raced to a 1-0 lead early in that match with a goal from Ethel Chinyerere in the 16th minute before Rhinos equalised six minutes later through Daisy Kaitano. Natasha Ndowa extended the lead for Chapungu after 33 minutes with the goal proving to be the decider as the side side failed to contain their air force counterparts.

Correctional Queens and Chapungu maintained their respective third and fourth places on the 16-team log standings, as did Platinum Royals who are still in fifth position with 17 points.

However, the biggest mover of the weekend was Harare City who jumped three places in the positive from number nine to sixth place after thumping Conduit Soccer Academy 4-0 at Mudhindo Stadium on Saturday. A hat-trick from Eunice Chibanda and one goal from Faith Chisi gave the Lady Citizens their bragging rights at Mudhindo Stadium.

Maningi Youth Academy slipped one place to number seven following their 1-0 defeat by Platinum Royals on Saturday at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane. Charity Karuru got the all-important goal for Platinum Royals in the 44th minute. In Gweru, Highlanders Royals moved up two places up from number 12  after beating MSU Queens 3-1.

Bosso’s skipper Mitchel Guri scored a hat-trick to condemn MSU to a heavy defeat at home while the hosts got a consolation goal from Tariro Dzingisai.
