ZimStat recruits 189 for economic census enumeration

In an interview, ZimStat production statistics division manager Nelson Mupfugami said the workshop was aimed at equipping enumerators with skills on how to draw maps for the economic census.

THE Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has recruited about 189 individuals to pioneer the economic census mapping exercise to be conducted in Matabeleland North, South and Bulawayo regions.

The development is meant to enumerate all business establishments in Zimbabwe and shape economic policies.

The enumerators started training at Hillside Teachers College in Bulawayo yesterday.

In an interview, ZimStat production statistics division manager Nelson Mupfugami said the workshop was aimed at equipping enumerators with skills on how to draw maps for the economic census.

“For this region, we have about 189 enumerators recruited by ZimStat specifically for this mapping exercise. We are going to equip them with the skills on how to draw maps for our economic census,” he said.

“After this training exercise, they are now going to be deployed to the business areas where they are going to collect the actual data for the mapping.

“This involves demarcating the country into small geographic areas, which we call business enumeration areas, then after that comes the mapping.”

Mupfugami said the mapping exercise would be followed by the listing exercise, whereby the enumerators visit business enumeration areas, listing all the establishments there.

“Once we have the economic census, we now have a complete frame of all the establishments and economic activities being undertaken in Zimbabwe, which will inform all the services,” he said.

Meanwhile, ZimStat has revealed its 2025 Economic Census objective targeting heavy and light industries, home industries, vegetable markets shopping malls and centres.

The census will also target open markets, avenue markets, open spaces (tombstone and car sales), high rise businesses, rural growth points, business centres and weaving, carpentry and welding businesses.
