POLICE have released the name of the person who died and those injured when a building in downtown Harare collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
One person died and six others were injured when a building along Chinhoyi Street near Gulf Complex collapsed on people who were hiding from a hailstorm along a pavement.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the deceased as Yolanda Hodzi (40) of Maridale, Norton.
The injured were identified as Kudzaishe Mafauna of Ushewokunze, Trywell Leadmore of Adylinn, Westgate, Wadzanai Baureni of Waterfalls, Brendon Madondo of Unit K, Chitungwiza and Conilias Chiwaka of Ruwa.
Nyathi said the body of the deceased was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for a post-mortem while the injured were also taken to the same hospital for medical assistance.
Three vehicles – a Mazda 323, Toyota Probox and Toyota Spade – that were parked close to the building were also damaged.
Nyathi said the value of the damaged property was yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, one of the suspects in the Quest Financial Services armed robbery in Belgravia two months ago was on Thursday shot dead by detectives during an exercise to recover a gun stolen in the robbery.

The Quest Financial Services armed robbery occurred on February 25, 2024, where the firm lost US$720 676, R10 500, 120 euro, a 7.65mm CV Vzor pistol and three laptops.
Nyathi said one of the outstanding suspects, Blessing Sumbani Sithole (49), was shot along Manyame River in Southlea Park, Harare.
“On April 4, 2024, detectives from CID Harare received information that Blessing Sumbani Sithole (49) was hiding at a house in Makondo Extension, Chiredzi. The detectives tracked the suspect to Chiredzi, where he was subsequently arrested,” the police spokesperson said.
“The arrest led to the recovery of a .38 special revolver with seven rounds and a Toyota Probox vehicle, registration number AGF 1832, which the suspect claimed to have bought for US$6 300 using his share from the loot.”
Nyathi said Sithole led detectives to Manyame River in Southlea Park, where he claimed to have hidden the CZ Vzor pistol.
While at the riverbank, Sithole is said to have retrieved the pistol and cocked it before aiming it at the detectives, who responded by shooting him in the back. Sithole was rushed to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, where he died upon admission
