THE Lupane Local Board has embarked on the Mtshibini water reticulation project to improve water supplies in the Matabeleland North capital.
The Lupane board has been complaining that water challenges are stalling progress in the provincial capital.
In an update report, board chairperson Thandolwenkosi Nyoni said the project was set to uplift the living standards of Lupane residents.
“The project is of high importance to Lupane town as it will provide the required infrastructure to attract investors for urban growth and most of all, water for drinking and sanitation to sustain health, livelihoods and the general living environment of residents,” Nyoni said.
“The quality of infrastructure in an economy is a measure of the quality of life of the citizens in a country. The project is aligned to the National Vision 2030 to achieve an empowered and prosperous upper-middle-income society by 2030.
“The strategy is to improve water supply, with the target to increase access to potable and quality water.”
Nyoni said the project was 30% complete.
“The engineering department is working diligently on the Mtshibini water reticulation project that is designed to service 300 residential and commercial properties,” he said.

Meanwhile, the local board has reported that it is owed over USD$700 000 by ratepayers, with government departments and ministries also lagging in payments.
The council said this was crippling operations of the local authority which is failing to provide efficient services.
