Delta Corporation Limited has sunk a US$ 10 000 solar borehole in Nyahunda, Bikita in a bid to provide clean source of water and fight the spread of cholera in one of the disease’s epicentres.
The beverage maker also refurbished facilities at the primary school at a cost of US$15 000.
Bikita is among the districts battling a cholera outbreak, and the gesture by Delta will benefit over 5 000 people who reside in the area including 500 students of Tagona Secondary and Chitenderano Primary schools.
“This year Delta Corporation provided USD10,000 for a solar borehole in Nyahunda Small Scale Farms, Bikita. The borehole will benefit over 5,000 people including 500 learners of Tagona Secondary and Chitenderano Primary schools,” Delta general manager for corporate affairs, Patricia Murambinda said.
“In addition, the company refurbished a classroom block, a teacher’s house, and ablution facilities for the school children to the tune of USD15,000 after the buildings’ roofs had been destroyed by the heavy rains that fell across the country in October 2023.”
Bikita has experienced perennial water shortages and a high number of malaria cases. It has also suffered from an outbreak of typhoid resulting from people using contaminated water.
“The project which was started during late last year is focused on addressing the problem of inadequate water and poor sanitation at Tagona and Chitenderano schools and the community in Nyahunda that will also contribute towards mitigating the spread of the ongoing Cholera epidemic,” Murambinda said.
“The schools were able to host the ZEC polling officers training ahead of the August 2023 harmonized elections.”

At Chitendero, Delta refurbished a classroom block, a teacher’s house and ablution facilities in a bid to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for the residents.
“This project has enabled us to take a step towards empowering communities to fight against the cholera pandemic, while delivering on the vital human need, of access to water. The provision of the solarized borehole will alleviate climate change induced water shortages in rural areas housing some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the country, which has been made possible through a generous grant from Delta,” Murambinda said.
