Power outages hit Harare water supply

The Harare City Council has attributed the current water shortages to the ongoing power cuts in the country.

In a statement this morning, city spokesperson Stanley Gama said the water situation had deteriorated owing to faults at the Morton Jaffray water treatment plant.

“Morton Jaffray (M.J) experienced a power failure at 0230 hrs this morning, and as at 1100 hrs, power was yet to be restored. ZESA has indicated that there is a problem on the Parkridge Sub–Station feeder,” said Gama.

“The alternative Norton feeder was lost on the 17th October and is also yet to be restored. As a result of the power failure at MJ, most of the city has no water.”

According to Gama, the city can only pump about 389 megaliters (ML) out of an average 704 ML capacity.

“Only those areas supplied from Prince Edward are accessing water and these include RG Mugabe International Airport, Hatfield, parts of Chitungwiza, Mbare, Sunningdale and Graniteside,” he said.
