Seven Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalists on Thursday came out tops after scooping awards in various categories during this year’s edition of the National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA), underlining its status as the best media group in Zimbabwe.
AMH are the publishers of The Standard, NewsDay and Zimbabwe Independent newspapers; and online radio station Heart & Soul.
The NJAMA awards are organised by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) and the ceremony was held in Harare.
AMH business editor Mthandazo Nyoni scooped two awards for Best Reporter in Mining and Best Financial Reporter runner-up awards.
Senior reporter Miriam Mangwaya was awarded the Legal and Parliamentary Best Reporter and also came second in the Best Photographer category. Mangwaya was also the Best Female Journalist runner-up.
Vanessa Gonye was the best Maternal Health Reporter of the Year, while online news editor Kennedy Nyavaya won the Sino-Zimbabwe journalist award.
Sindiso Dube won the Sexual Orientation, Gender, Identity and Expression Southern Region Best Reporter runner-up award.
AMH correspondent Amanda Jojo won the Upcoming Female Journalist of the Year gong while columnist Cliff Chiduku was runner-up in the Climate Journalist of the Year category In his speech during the event, ZUJ president George Maponga called on government to intervene and enhance a free operating environment for journalists.

“For journalists and media practitioners to be able to do this, allow me honourable minister to invite you and your ministry to dialogue and discourse with us towards creating an environment that allows journalists free enterprise,” he said.
“We have noted with concern and made pronouncements in condemnation of violations of journalists as they execute their work. These violations range from physical and emotional assault, barring journalists from select media organisations from covering events, forced deletion of material captured by journalists and being targeted for the media house you work for.”
