A 29-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to 10 years in jail by Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure for theft and vandalising railway infrastructure.

Jeffered Muzika was convicted on charges of contravening section 38 of the Railways Act.

The complainant in the matter is the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) represented by Ngosilathi Maseko from the loss control department.

State prosecutor Belinda Chimuka alleged that on September 14 this year at around 1100 hours, Maseko and Sergeant Major Mutanuri were on duty monitoring activities along a railway line.

The court heard that upon approaching some railway line section, the officers noticed Muzika and his accomplices removing components from the railway line.

Muzika was arrested while his accomplice fled from the scene.

The NRZ loss control officers then realised that Muzika removed the stretcher bar, point lever and coach screw from the railway line which was used as exhibits in court.
