THE Bulawayo City Council has sent a message of condolence to the family of former mayor Joshua Teke Malinga, who died on Friday last week at his home in Richmond in the City of Kings and Queens.
Malinga has since been declared a national hero.
In a statement yesterday, town clerk Christopher Dube said Malinga served the city with distinction during his tenure as mayor and councillor.
Malinga was elected councillor for ward 2 in 1987 serving until 1995.
“He was elected as deputy mayor for the 1992-93 municipal year and installed on August 19, 1992. He served as the mayor of the City of Bulawayo in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 municipal years.
“During his term of office, he served in numerous council committees which included the health, housing, amenities and liquor committee, the general purposes committee, town lands and planning committee and the finance committee, among others,” Dube said.
Malinga, according to Dube, further represented the City of Bulawayo in various outside bodies and committees.
“He was an active member of numerous organisations nationally and internationally and played a key role in championing the rights of persons with disability in the city and nation as a whole,” he said.
