ZIMBABWE’S only hospital providing orthopaedic care to children with disabilities has trebled its bed capacity from 18 to 58.
Located adjacent to United Bulawayo Hospitals, Cure Children’s Hospital was established in April 2021 to provide orthopaedic care to children with disabilities such as clubfoot, bowed legs and knocking knees.
The hospital was refurbished by the Zimbabwe Orthopaedic Trust in partnership with government.
Addressing journalists during a tour of the hospital on Monday, chief executive officer Jonathan Simpsons said nearly US$1,2 million was spent on the bed expansion project.
“We already have plans to build a warehouse and a workshop. Within the workshop we will have a lab, a pharmacy and other support services like a biomedical workshop,” Simpsons said.
The institution plans to cater for about 50 to 60 children at any given time as well as have three operating rooms, with about five surgeons conducting at least 1 500 procedures per year.
Bulawayo Provincial Affairs minister Judith Ncube said: “We are very thankful to the workers, government, nurses, doctors and all the support staff.
“They (hospital staff) told us that they also received patients from as far as Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. This simply gives us an indication that the hospital is doing a very good job.”
