THE trial of High Court prosecutor Henry Muringani, who is being charged of assisting dangerous criminals to get bail, resumed yesterday at the Harare Magistrates court.

Muringani, who is being represented by Gift Nyandoro, pleaded not guilty to three counts of criminal abuse of office when he appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.

In his defence, Muringani through his lawyers said: “The charge is a naked and malicious fabrication at the instance of complainant for reasons best known by the State. He will tell the court that he is a public officer who meets many people and cannot recall ever doing a bail application for the alleged State witnesses.”

Muringani said he should be acquitted. Three witnesses Josephine Kondo, Faith Karavina and Elia Murenzvi testified against Muringani.

The matter was remanded to today for continuation of trial.

It is alleged that Tafadzwa Mutengo was detained at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison facing charges of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm when Muringani prepared two bail applications for him.

Muringani demanded US$500 to facilitate Mutengo’s release.

Police recovered Muringani’s phones and a laptop containing communication between him and Murenzvi and other prison inmates who he had assisted to secure bail.
