Beitbridge town and surrounding border areas are set to benefit from the completion of a 11,4 mega litre reservoir to supply clean water, the local authority’s town secretary, Loud Ramakgapola has said.
Ramakgapola told Southern Eye that the project will soon be completed.
“Yes, I can confirm that it (water reservoir) has 11,4 mega-litre capacity. It will service the whole town, including the border post, and if there is need, it can also service other surrounding areas like Lutumba and Chamnanga,” Ramakgapola said.
The council provided the land where the reservoir has been constructed, which the council hopes would put an end to the cuts that have seen many parts of the border town going without water for days.
Ramakgapola said the reservoir would provide a lifeline for residents and stakeholders.
“The state of water is stable at the moment, however, supply is not enough. We have seen the bursting of pipes due to old age, this has been the reoccurring challenge that we are facing.
“The new reservoir will improve water pressure and adequacy,” he said.
Ramakgapola, however, said the reservoir was yet to be connected to the water grid.

“The construction of the reservoir is complete, what is outstanding is the connection to the council water reticulation system and (installing) a transformer to pump the water up the hill. Currently, a generator is in place but it is expensive to run,” he said.
