BINGA district in Matabeleland North province is in a major drive to promote tourism, taking advantage of the waterfronts the district is endowed with.
Daphine Musanka the Binga Tourism Centre spokesperson told Southern Eye that the district was the only one in the country with a beach, adding that it was beginning to host beach activities along the shores of Zambezi River.
“We have started beach activities such as braai and volleyball because we have a lot of water since we are along the Zambezi River. As such, we have facilities such as boat cruising from Binga to Kariba and sport fishing along the way. We have a lot of inland activities where one can have a stopover and enjoy scenic views of wild animals along the way,’’ Musanka said.
“Binga is also blessed with five unique hotsprings with hot and cold water coming out of the same point interchangeably. Chimbatata Hotspring is near Binga centre. It produces hot water throughout the year.
“We are also promoting our culture with a variety of crafts. We have our wild fruit called tamarandi also known as busikka, which has multi-medicinal functions. It is good for treating high blood pressure and other types of illnesses. We have our jatropha soap which is good for skin care,’’ she said.
Binga Rural District Council chief executive officer Joshua Muzamba confirmed that they have embarked on a drive to develop tourism facilities in the town.
“We have to build lodges around lakeshores. We have come up with a five-year strategic plan where half of our budget next year will cater for sprucing up of tourist facilities as we play a facilitative role for private players to partner us in this cause,’’ Muzamba said.
