City council boss bounces back

Harare City Council

HARARE City Council (HCC) human capital director Cainos Chingombe has bounced back, but his recall has reportedly divided the local authority.

Chingombe was suspended over abuse of office allegations in 2017 and has been fighting for reinstatement. He won several judgements at the Labour Court.

A meeting was held last week at the council chambers where seven councillors voted for his return while five wanted him to stay away.

A councillor who attended the meeting yesterday said they are planning to block his return at a full council meeting slated for this Thursday.

“We had a human resources meeting last week and councillors are divided over the return of our former human resources director Chingombe,” a disgruntled councillor said.

“We voted and seven councillors voted for his return while five voted against return.  He has some corruption case to answer and we don’t want him. We are going to block his return at the full council meeting on Thursday.”

Chingombe was suspended in 2017 before being reinstated last year in November and was eventually fired a few months later. The local municipality lost the labour case against he brought against it.

Council spokesperson Innocent Ruwende directed questions to Harare City mayor Jacob Mafume.

Contacted for comment yesterday Mafume said he was ina meeting.
