BY PRIVELEDGE GUMBODETE THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has concluded a training exercise with its Botswana counterparts on prison policing, protocol and etiquette as part of a recent agreement between the countries.
In a Press statement on Wednesday, Botswana Prison Service (BPS) public relations officer Senior Superintendent Oagile Kojane commended the collaboration on best practices on prison policing.
“The collaboration has resulted in the establishment of different areas of co-operation, which include among others technical co-operation, sports and culture exchange etc,” Kojane said in the statement.
“Some of the benefits that were born out of the co-operation between the two services is the training of members of BPS in prison policing, protocol and etiquette both conducted by ZCPS.”
BPS Commissioner Dinah Marathe visited Zimbabwe in April and signed a prisoner swap memorandum of understanding.
Under the agreement, Zimbabweans who are serving in different jails in Botswana would complete part of their sentence in Zimbabwe and vice-versa for Botswana inmates in Zimbabwe.
“During her previous visit to Zimbabwe, Marathe and her delegation had an opportunity to appreciate the functions and benefits of the prison police unit, hence the decision to establish it within the BPS.”
Marathe visited ZPCS in April this year.

Currently, a Zimbabwean delegation led by Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu is in Botswana for a tour during which he officially opened the prison police protocol and etiquette courses on Wednesday at the Prison Staff College in Mahalapye. The delegation is set to travel back to Zimbabwe today.
