DYNAMOS moved clear of the chasing pack in Group 1 of the Chibuku Super Cup after a battling win over Harare City at the National Sports Stadium, a victory that coach Tonderai Ndiraya dedicated to club legend David Mandigora, who passed on yesterday afternoon.

It was a day that the club was also commemorating the fifth anniversary of the nine supporters, who perished in a road accident in Kwekwe on their way to Gweru for a Dynamos versus Chapungu match.

Substitute King Nadolo was the hero of the day yesterday when he rose from the bench to score the only goal of the match in the 75th minute, heading home a cross from Emmanuel Jalayi.

With the win, the Harare giants moved five points clear of second placed CAPS United, who play ZPC Kariba this afternoon with a chance to close the gap.

Harare City are also on six points, while ZPC Kariba and Yadah both have five points.

Herentals anchor the group with two points after the first round of group matches.

“We lost some loyal fans on their way to Kwekwe to support their beloved team so we were playing with them in mind today,” Ndiraya said.

“I would like to dedicate this win to those famous nine supporters, who perished in that accident.”

Just before kick-off, news filtered in of the passing on of Mandigora, who played for and coached the club.

“I would also like to dedicate the win to the club legend David Mandigora. We are so saddened to lose him,” said Ndiraya, who is targeting two more wins in the next round of matches.

“Im happy that out of 15 possible points, we collected 11, so that is a good record for us.

“I am glad that this much-needed win today has pushed us a little bit away from the other teams.

“It has given us a good cushion going into the second round of matches.

“The team is not as fluid as I would have wanted, but what is important are the points that we got.

“Playing a good team and getting results out of them gives me a lot of pleasure.”

City coach Lloyd Chitembwe believes his team still has a chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

He, however, said his main priority was to build a side that can challenge for the premier league title.

Chitembwe is building a team after losing some of the stars, including Ishmael Wadi who joined CAPS United.

“We are in the right space and I’m quite happy with my boys’ performance,” Chitembwe said.

“We are in a long haul because we have this competition [Chibuku] and there is also the league, which to me is much more important.

“All competitions are important, but my focus mainly is to prepare a team that is good enough to compete next season.

“What happens in the Chibuku trophy wont have any serious bearing on our target going forward.

“But its still game on, no team has won the group yet. We still have a chance.”
