LOCAL actress Gamuchirai Duve, who had been nominated for the Best Actress award at the annual Lake International Pan-African Film Festival (LIPFF) held in Kenya recently for her role in Kushata Kwemoyo, described her experience at the festival as an eye-opener.
Duve attended the November 7 to 10 festival following the film’s nomination for the Best Feature Film Best Actress and Best Editor award.
She told NewsDay Life & Style that although she failed to bring an award home, she was glad to have learnt a lot during the festival.
“It was a great experience. I learnt a lot from films that I watched and interacting with fellow (actors) from different African countries,” she said.
“In terms of my acting I need to up my game. I was inspired very much by the acting that I witnessed in most of the films showcased. As an industry we need to proudly tell our stories in our own languages. All the films I watched were in native languages.”
Duve stressed the need for local filmmakers to work extra hard and submit more films to international festivals.
Nigeria screened 65 films, Uganda 20, Ghana 15 and Zimbabwe only had one — Kushata KweMoyo.

“Nigeria even submitted more than 200 films and it’s known for producing 500 films per day. Can you imagine? It’s a clear sign that we are not working hard. We need to work hard and submit more films on such platforms,” she said.
The actresses indicated her probability of featuring in a Nigerian film following her interaction with a director of one of the films showcased.
