Reigning Miss Zimbabwe, Malaika Mushandu is set to represent the country at this year’s Miss Top Model of the World beauty pageant which will be held in Dortmund, Germany, on March 10.

She will travel to Germany next month to join other models from different continents.

This will be Mushandu’s second international pageant after she represented Zimbabwe well at the 2011 Miss World contest held in England where she came ninth.

Over 50 contestants will vie for the most coveted title at the 19th edition Top Model of the World. At the previous edition Miss Zimbabwe 2008, Vanessa Gayle Sibanda was crowned second runner-up.

Loredana Salanta from Romania was crowned queen.

While in camp, the delegates will tour and visit various cities in Germany.

A statement issued by the organisers of the event read: “Whoever said ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ has never seen the Miss Top Model of the world crown as girls normally dream of being a princess, dressed in a beautiful gown and wearing sparkling jewellery.”

Mushandu, who had taken a break from modelling after Miss World, said she has dedicated 2012 to experimenting in the modelling industry.

“After Miss World, I decided to take a break from modelling so as to meditate and find out if I wanted to pursue modelling as a career or if I wanted to venture into something else.

“I decided to take 2012 as my year of experimenting in the modelling industry,” she said.

She is preparing for the Miss Top Model pageant by seeking advice from various modelling gurus.

“Miss World was more of being a lady and being elegant but Miss Top Model is more about being fashion-conscious and has less formal events than Miss World.

“I am going to the gym and I’m on a strict diet so that I maintain my body and embody high fashion industry standards,” she said.

Mushandu thanked Zimbabweans for supporting her when she was at Miss World and asked them to continue supporting her as she prepares for Miss Top Model.

The Top Model of the World pageant is an international search for the ultimate model that is independent, talented and fashion-conscious.

The pageant started in 1993 in Miami and went on to be held in Germany and China.

It presents an opportunity to share universal values and collectively define a common ideal of elegance and beauty.
