Asaph Afrika gears for Byo shutdown debut

Life & Style
“It is my first time performing at the Bulawayo Shutdown, but it is not my first time rocking big stages,” he said.

BULAWAYO-BASED hip-hop artiste Asaph Afrika is bubbling with excitement as he prepares to make his debut performance at the highly-anticipated Bulawayo Shutdown 9th Edition on

April 26.

Despite being a newcomer to the shutdown stage, Asaph is no stranger to rocking big crowds, having previously performed at high-profile events such as the Vic Falls Carnival, the National Arts Merit Awards,

Unplugged and Munch ‘n’ Sip.

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Asaph Afrika expressed excitement for the opportunity to perform at the event.

“It is my first time performing at the Bulawayo Shutdown, but it is not my first time rocking big stages,” he said.

“So fans can expect some classics, but I will also perform some new favourites like Run Byo. It’s my first big performance in a long time so I have to make a statement.”

Asaph Afrika said he was grateful to perform alongside other artistes, adding that it was an indication that more local artistes could perform on big stages.

“Well, I am always grateful for being on the lineup. I have been performing alongside South African artistes since 2018. I headlined the Shoko Festival with Moonchild Sanely and I was with Sun El Musician at Unplugged, I even gifted him a City of Kings Hoodie,” he said.

“What I hope people understand from all this is that my being on the lineup is an indication that more local artistes can rock big stages starting in their cities. The talent and the quality are there. I am just an example.”

The shutdown event is set to take set the Queens Sports Ground alight, featuring an electrifying lineup of both South African and Zimbabwean artistes.

The South African contingent includes Uncle Waffles, Emtee, Zee Nxumalo, Eemoh, DJ Tira and Nasty C, while local talent will be represented by Winky D, Enzo Ishall, DJ Tamuka, Oriyano, Asaph, Bazooker, Killer T, Ash T, DJ Eugy, Prince Eskhosini, Boy Nino, Mzoe 7 and Madeherbelieve.

The 9th edition of the shutdown will mark the end of the annual Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
