Heavenly Praises Chorus

MUFAKOSE-BASED gospel group Heavenly Praises Chorus emerged victorious in the Econet iJoy After Joy Choral Competition, at Harare International School last Friday. The talented ensemble took home the grand prize of US$2 500, impressing judges and the audience with its vocal prowess and harmony.

The competition, which brought together some of Zimbabwe’s finest choral groups, saw Glorious Melodies Choir securing second place and winning US$1 500, while Vox Angelorum clinched third place, walking away with US$1 000.

Other choirs that participated in the highly anticipated musical event included Majestic Chorale, Ruwa Chorale, Bethesda Choir, Glorious Melodies Academy, Anointed Voices and Kuwadzana Community Choir.

Participating choirs were tasked with performing Econet’s popular Tapinda Sesingenile jingle. The challenge involved choirs creatively re-composing the verse originally performed by Master H, replacing it with their unique and original melodies while retaining the iconic chorus.

The evening was not just about competition; it was a true celebration of Zimbabwe’s vibrant choral music culture.

The event featured guest performances from renowned vocalists, adding an extra layer of excitement to the night. Among them was Molly Dzangare, a rising Zimbabwean opera singer whose powerful voice captivated the audience.

Adding to the evening’s richness were Chitungwiza Harmony Singers, one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated choral groups and Divine Touch from Chikurubi Prisons, whose heartfelt performance moved the crowd. These special acts underscored the event’s mission — to celebrate music as a unifying and uplifting force.

Speaking at the event, Econet representative Chengeto Moyo reaffirmed the company’s dedication to nurturing local musical talent and fostering community engagement.

“By creating this platform, Econet is doing far more than celebrating music — it is fostering a sense of belonging, pride and artistic excellence,” Moyo said.

He emphasised that choral music has been an integral part of Zimbabwean culture for generations, serving as a bridge that connects communities through melody and harmony.

“At the core of this competition lies a shared love for choral music. Music has the power to transcend barriers, uplift spirits and create unforgettable moments. Today, through melody and harmony, we are not only entertained but also inspired, connected and reminded of the beauty that exists in collaboration,” Moyo said.

The Harare edition of the iJoy After Joy Choral Competition followed an electrifying showdown in Bulawayo, where Sound of Joy Chorale emerged victorious in the iJoy After Joy Bulawayo Choral Music Competition. The group delivered a breathtaking performance, securing the top spot ahead of Amaqaqa, a well-respected choral ensemble known for its powerful harmonies and BICC Mpopoma, whose soulful renditions captivated the audience.

Beyond the iJoy After Joy competition, Econet continues to support Zimbabwean artistes through its Buddie Bits music platform. The innovative app provides a digital space for musicians to showcase their talents, reach a wider audience and grow their careers.
