ZIM Folk Fusion, a series of monthly live music concerts that debuted last year at Theatre in the Park in Harare, is set to host its fourth showcase on March 1 at The Grub Restaurant and Pub in Eastlea, Harare.
The show will be headlined by Chimurenga musician Kurai Makore and the Black Lions.
It will feature a diverse mix of talented artistes such as the all-female Afro-traditional outfit MAZWi, Afro-soul artist Cingi and mbira group True Bhantu Tribe.
Chichi Wembira of MAZWi told NewsDay Life & Style that fans can look forward to an amazing performance fused with traditional and modern mbira music, dance and poetry under one set.
“They should be ready to put on their dancing shoes because it’s going to be lit,” she said.
In 2023, MAZWi took first position in the Chibuku Road to Fame competition, representing Harare province and secured second position last year.
According to event organiser Trymore “Guchi” Jombo, besides fostering cultural awareness and appreciation for the Zimbabwean heritage, the aim of Zim Folk Fusion events is to showcase music that is rooted in Zimbabwean culture and tradition while bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary
music.
The mbira, a hugely popular instrument in Zimbabwean traditional music, is at the core of most of the performances that are highlighted.
The monthly concerts seek to cultivate a vibrant connection with Zimbabwe’s rich musical heritage while also using music to celebrate cultural diversity in the community.
“The concerts are designed to showcase contemporary live music performances that are inspired or informed by local genres as a way of generating momentum that will ensure the continuous presence of music inspired by local values,” Jombo added.
Artistes who have previously graced the concert include Nyamasvisva ne Mawungira eNharira, Droba and Jangano Tribe, Chester Sax, Taffie Matiure, Tendai Mavengeni and Zowa Kurirai.
Tickets are priced at US$10 and are available for purchase at the venue or online at https://t.ly/fYJ9o.
