PAINTER and fine artist Munyaradzi Mapfumo believes art is critical in socialisation, uniting and fostering peace.

Mapfumo's creations are stroked on canvas, manilla and other art objects.

The artifacts are meant to promote peace, mutual beneficiation and maintain global security.

“It is important to preserve peace and to live in harmony as one people, especially at this time when world peace is under threat by global wars, terrorism and geopolitics,” he said.

“World peace and security is also threatened by adverse weather caused by climatic changes and socio-economic factors, undermining development.

“Only art can be used for managing conflicts, keeping the world at peace and easing tensions. That’s why I draw various creations, symbols and popular personalities, hoping that it will help to preserve and maintain world peace.”

Art in African countries is not fully appreciated as compared to other continents, whereby it affects national and international dimensions.

Its capacity to resolve differences and disputes through dialogue and consultation is underestimated.

“Tackling security challenges and strengthening the countries capacity to resolve  challenges, can be achieved through art,” Mapfumo added.

The Chitungwiza-based artist said socio-economic factors that are affecting the country had not spared him either

“As artists, we have been affected by the economic downturn, like everyone else. My motto is never give up no matter what,” he said.

Inspired by Italian and world iconic painter and fine artist Leonardo da Vinci, Mapfumo hopes to open a studio in future to help up-and-coming artists who are financial difficulties.

He started stroking in 2010, after failing in love with Da Vinci's works.
