RENOWNED imbube ensemble Black Umfolosi has dedicated its recent award to its late members.
The outfit was one of the eight recipients of the different awards given by government on Monday at the National Heroes Acre during the Heroes Day celebrations in Harare.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa handed founding group member Sotja Moyo the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe in Bronze for the ensemble’s hit single Unity.
Sotja, who is the only surviving member of the original group, told NewsDay Life & Style that the recognition was a bittersweet experience.
“As an individual, it brings great memories of how people reacted to our first live presentation at HICC [Harare International Conference Centre] in 1987. As the sole remaining member of the original team, I just wish we were all still around to experience this wonderful moment,” he said.
“Anyway, some have left us [may their souls rest in peace]. We dedicate this award to them and all those who have supported us this far and still do support us as the journey still moves on.”
Sotja said the award humbled them as a group.
“The award means a lot to us as a team that has come a long way in the arts and music journey. To be recognised by the State for our positive contribution is refreshing and humbling, taking into account that it was issued by the Head of State, President Mnangagwa,” he said.

Mnangagwa showered the stars with praises, explaining how the song touched the hearts of many people across the country since its release.
“The conferment of medals on individuals who have shown valour and performed distinguished humanitarian acts aims to immortalise their contributions,” Mnangagwa said.
“We are recognising the Black Umfolosi ensemble for their song Unity, which has stood the test of time.”
