THE prestigious Miss Rural pageant is not only a showcase of local beauty but a beckon of cultural preservation and ecological awareness, Environment minister Sithembiso Nyoni has said
The pageant officially kicked off at Ja Dijo Restaurant in Bulawayo at the weekend, promising a thrilling contest that will showcase the beauty, talent, and rural heritage of local young women.
The event, which drew a diverse crowd of guests from the world of entertainment, royalty and politics, marked the beginning of a journey that will take the contestants through a series of challenges before the ultimate winner is crowned as queen.
Addressing guests at the event, Nyoni said the initiative marked a unique way of celebrating African norms and values while also drawing attention to the need for environmental conservation.
“Tonight we gather to celebrate a remarkable initiative that embodies the spirit of unity, culture and environmental stewardship,” Nyoni said.
“It's a pageant that seeks to emancipate rural boys and girls while conscientiously educating them about the paramount importance of keeping our environment clean.
“Furthermore, I am delighted to support the wearing of Zimbabwe's national fabric, the promotion of culinary practices, the revitalisation of traditional arts and dance and the vital role of being good environment ambassadors, particularly in rural communities”.
According to Nyoni, the rural communities are the backbone of Zimbabwe’s society although they are often overshadowed by the quest for modernity.

“They (rural communities) face unique challenges, including the need for environmental conservation and sustainable development,” she said.
Some of the guests at the event included Chief Dakamela, Arts, Bulawayo City Council's culture and heritage officer Nomashawekazi Damasane and Zanu PF national political commissar Munyaradzi Machacha.
Meanwhile, Miss Rural founder Sipho Mazibuko said the national launch will take place next month.
