BULAWAYO-BASED author, Bongani Ndlovu has penned a 144-page isiNdebele manuscript to help intensify drug and substance abuse awareness.In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, Ndlovu said the book took a look at the role parents play in curbing the menace in societies.
Ndlovu decided to write the book after witnessing the deadly effect drugs have on many young people in Bulawayo’s Magwegwe high-density suburb.“It takes a look at the role of parents, children, schools and law enforcement agencies and other such organisations (in reducing drug and substance abuse),” Ndlovu said.
“It also looks at teenage pregnancy, Vuzu parties, dysfunctional families and how much these affect young people. It is named Sibazalele Enkotheni, to show that there is something that needs to be done to correct these ills,” continued Ndlovu.
The book holds a collection of suggestions proposed by the elderly to correct societal ills.“The elderly appeal for public schools, especially, to have platforms that allow children to seek help; schools should have a therapist that will be stationed at the institution so that they can talk to them,” Ndlovu said.
“Our society is full of people who are grown up, with bottled up traumatic young experiences and therapy is alien in black society.“They also appealed to the conscience of those with money that funds these illicit drugs and parties to direct their resources to good use.”
