TO help fight the growing drug abuse menace in communities, Youth Advocacy for Reform and Democracy (Yard) will on Saturday host a drug abuse awareness campaign at Ngoni Stadium in Norton.
Norton MP Temba Mliswa (Independent), who is the founder of Yard is hosting the free event dubbed Norton Anti-drug Abuse Awareness Campaign, where people will be treated to live music from across genres.
The campaign and free concert, whose objective is to urge youths to abstain from drug abuse and headlined by popular Zimdancehall chanter Seh Calaz, will run under the theme United Against Drug Abuse, Violence and Crime.
Also to perform at the concert, scheduled to start at 8am and end at 6pm, is chanter Celcious, Shumbakadzi, Nyanduri LMC and Tendai and many other artistes from Norton.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister Paul Mavima is expected to be the guest of honour.
“As Norton, we shall be hosting a drug abuse awareness campaign which will culminate in a musical show. The two things at the centre of destroying this country are drugs and corruption. Their spiral effects have created other dangers and problems for this country,” Mliswa tweeted yesterday.
“The campaign will not only ensure that the youths are educated on the dangers of drug abuse and how it affects the future, but we have also gathered solutions to ensure that the youths involved in drugs are given something to do in the form of projects,” Langton Chemhere from Norton constituency youth desk told NewsDay Life & Style.
“We have engaged corporate companies to join us in solving the pandemic of drug abuse in Norton. One of the main reasons we are hosting this campaign is to spread the message to the youths. We want them to know that we will be coming to different wards with projects like poultry farming, which is sponsored by Mashwede Holdings. Some of the projects are already underway.

“Ngoni Stadium has opened doors to youths who are interested in sporting activities. We also have the Temba Mliswa scholarships for those youths affected by drugs, but are academically gifted and we have also engaged recording studios in the constituency to sign and nurture talents of those youths who are interested in doing music.”
Yard will use the campaign as a platform to announce more details on the projects designed for the youths involved in drug abuse, to empower them and keep them off the streets.
