Relevant leadership

Opinion & Analysis
Leadership is no longer positional, but empirical; results will show if you are a great leader.

IF you stay the same in the next five years, you might find yourself relevant.

The call for relevant leadership has never been louder in the fast evolving world.

Leadership is no longer positional, but empirical; results will show if you are a great leader.

Adaptability

We live in shifting landscapes economically, technologically and even socially.

Staying without improving yourself is cataclysmic as a leader.

We need continuous learning and improvement.

Life is unpredictable, and the leader has to be eying the next bounce of the ball all the time.

Adaptable leaders work with and consult teams.

These teams are encouraged to be the eyes and the hands of an organisation.

Secondly, feedback becomes the life blood of the leader and his team.

If you thwart teams, it becomes hard for them to contribute and help you become adaptable.

Agility

Agility speaks to speed and precision in responding to change and problems.

It’s the wisdom that helps the reader see opportunity in a problem, predict and prepare for possible change.

An agile leader knows what’s important and urgent.

They know what is non urgent and unimportant and they use the time management matrix to solve the problem at hand.

An agile leader masters speed, quickness, efficiency and effectiveness.

Ability

We have many managers and leaders who hold on to positions, but don’t have a sense of direction.

A leader should have skill, knowledge, and expertise.

Besides, he must continuously learn to improve himself.

Ability also means the leader is able to bring needed talent and other resources to synergistic use.

In addition, ability would mean growth and development within a given context.

A great leader is measured by his ability to groom and grow other leaders.

Adding value

Lasting impact or legacy is seen when one creates impacts.

Lasting impact is seen when you grow leaders who will multiply your efforts and legacy.

Secondly impact is seen when you add value to team members and society (stakeholders and stockholders).

Your reason for being a leader is your ability to add value, if you longer add value to others you cease being a leader.

A great leader instills a sense of purpose in workers who then create value as well.

Accelerated

Growth is important. When things stop growing they start deteriorating and ultimately die.

There is a need to grow and nurture a culture of growth and avail opportunities that expose workers and team players.

Awareness

Great leaders have a bigger or heightened sense of self and situational awareness.

This helps them make informed decisions and build strong relationships.

This awareness makes one to be emotionally intelligent.

Authenticity

Teams that you work with must have a sense of openness and comfort in your presence as a leader.

This can be cultivated by being an authentic leader.

People can easily pick feelings and your emotions, and to build trust you must be authentic.

This makes it easy for other team players to genuinely convey their feelings, emotions and ideas for the better of the company.

Accountability

Integrity is built by taking responsibility for your actions.

To stay relevant, you therefore need to be accountable to the people you lead and those you report to.

Affirmation

Provide positive reinforcement and recognising great efforts.

Employees always need recognition.

This comes in different ways of appreciation.

Alignment

As pointed out, times are changing.

Change will never wait for you and we need to be constantly aligning and disrupting.

To stay in alignment, you need to be an avid learner. Leadership is always learning and aligning to the following needs.
