MATABELELAND South senator Tambudzani Mohadi has urged the government to increase the budget allocation to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, adding that the inmates are living in squalid conditions yet they have rights like everyone else.

Mohadi was speaking in Parliament recently in support of the motion to increase budget allocation for prisons and refurbishment of the correctional facilities.

“Parliament is urged to advocate for increased budgetary allocation to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service,” she said.

“This funding is necessary for the refurbishment of prison facilities, which are critical for improving conditions within our correctional facilities and upholding dignity to all individuals.”

Mohadi added that the Finance ministry should adequately and timely fund the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) so that it can be able to protect and promote human rights in the country.

“Adequate and timely funding to ZHRC will help the independent (commission) to effectively monitor, investigate and report on human rights across the nation,” she said.

She said addressing human rights issues will promote social harmony and position Zimbabwe as a country which prioritises the dignity and rights of its citizens.

“Upholding the human rights issue is not a matter of compliance, but a strategic investment in the long-term as it will be bring prosperity to the nation,” Mohadi said, adding that the Industry and Commerce ministry should implement procedures that benefit the local communities upon establishment of companies within their communities.
