ABOUT 2 000 vulnerable members of the society drawn from 192 villages in Murewa South constituency have benefited from rice donated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a move meant to ensure food security during the festive season.
Murewa South MP Noah Mangondo ensured the donation reached all the villages and concluded the distribution of the rice in his constituency yesterday.
Mnangagwa recently gave each of the 360 parliamentarians four tonnes of rice to be distributed in their respective constituencies ahead of the festive season.
Speaking during the distribution exercise in Virginia, Macheke, Mangondo said he tasked the traditional leadership with identifying beneficiaries.
“I received 80 bags of rice. I then engaged village heads and councillors to identify those in dire need such as widows and the elderly,” he said.
“We have about 192 villages in Murewa South and each village provided 10 beneficiaries. In short, close to 2 000 villagers benefited from the donation.”
Zimbabwe is currently experiencing acute food shortages triggered by the El Niño-induced drought.
About six million people face hunger and starvation in the country.
