ZIMBABWE is set to host the 6th Privacy Symposium Africa in Harare bringing together privacy experts, policymakers and business leaders to discuss key issues surrounding data protection.

The indaba, starting today and ending tomorrow, will run under the theme, Bridging Policy, Technology and Societal Dynamics and it will include key stakeholders, electoral commissions, political parties, candidates and voters.

Organised by Privacy Symposium Africa, this year’s event will seek to enhance the intersection of policy, technology and societal dynamics in data protection.

The highlight of the symposium will be a special session titled, Women in Privacy 2024, to be held today. Amaka Ibeji, an AI Governance Faculty Member at the International Association of Privacy Professionals in the United States, will lead the session.

Ibeji is expected to offer guidance to aspiring women in privacy and outline her vision for future advocacy.

The symposium will include masterclasses that offer in-depth training on various privacy-related topics.

A call for papers was made, inviting submissions on election data governance, which will be the focal point of this year’s discussions. Researchers and experts have until November 1 to submit their abstracts.

The event will also feature a segment titled Let’s Talk Privacy, focusing on emerging issues in the realm of data protection, alongside the launch of the Privacy ScoreCard Report, which will assess the current privacy landscape in Africa.

Since 2023, Privacy Symposium Africa SA has adopted a sectoral approach to explore unique challenges and opportunities in different sectors.

This year’s edition will specifically address election data governance, covering aspects such as data collection, processing, storage and usage in electoral processes.
