MORE than 60 elderly people in Macheke, Mashonaland East province, yesterday benefited food aid from Murewa South legislator Noah Mangondo as drought ravages the urban community.
Mangondo, a former diplomat and farmer, donated three tonnes of maize to the elderly in Macheke as part of hunger mitigating measures.
Addressing the elderly, Mangondo said there is need for more partners to come forward and address the food crisis in the area.
“I brought this maize to assist the elderly in Macheke. They need this as we fight the El Niño-induced drought,” he said.
“I brought a tonne due to transport challenges. The remaining two tonnes will be brought here this coming week.
“I call upon other partners or individual to come forward and assist the elderly or vulnerable members of the society with food.”
Macheke forms part of Murewa South constituency.
Government is currently rolling out a food aid programme across the country, with Murewa South included.

“Phase 1 of the government food distribution programme is over and we are happy that all wards in Murewa South were covered. We are now into Phase 2 and it is going on well,” Mangondo said.
“In Macheke, the urban part of the constituency , beneficiaries will receive cash disbursement as compared to other wards that got food in the form of grain.”
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since extended a US$3 billion begging bowl in a bid to alleviate hunger in the country.
