A must win match for Zim

Editorials
Zimbabwe national football team

The Zimbabwe national football team is  in South Africa where it is preparing for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya on Friday.

The Warriors will also play Cameroon in their last group match in Yaounde on Tuesday.

For now, the Friday match is hogging the limelight because the team can seal their place at next year's finals in Morocco by just avoiding defeat to Kenya.

A defeat can have devastating consequences as it will see Kenya’s chances brighten.

Zimbabwe are second in Group J with eight points behind already qualified Cameroon.

Kenya are third with four points and if they take three against Zimbabwe, they will go into next week's match against Namibia just a point behind The Warriors.

Experience has taught us that going to Cameroon needing a win is not the best of situations.

Zimbabwe just have to do a good job against Kenya and go to Cameroon for a stroll in the park in what will be  dead rubber.

We commend Zifa for the arrangements they have so far put in place for the team.

By Monday most of the players had gathered in Polokwane where they will host the match.

The last one arrived yesterday hence The Warriors will have reasonable time to prepare for the big match.

In international football, you rarely get more than three days of training.

Zimbabwe have players in Europe, America, South Africa and Asia and getting them together quickly is quite commendable on Zifa's part.

It is now left for the players, coaches and supporters to play  their part.

Coach Michael Nees has so far impressed everyone with his tactics particularly in defence where Zimbabwe have been mean, conceding two goals in four matches.

This has laid a foundation for the team to score particularly in the last match where it hit the net three times against Namibia.

We are confident that Nees did his homework to come up with the right plan to take The Warriors forward.

What is particularly pleasing is that so far all players called in are injury-free and raring to go.

We wish Nees and his charges all the best in their mission.

Fans are organising themselves to travel to Polokwane for the match.

We hope we can get as many fans in the stadium for this match so that they can inspire the team to win.

There are many Zimbabweans resident in Polokwane and we thus implore them to go and support The Warriors for the final push.

All the best to Warriors.
