ZIMBABWE Army General Edzai Absolom Chanyuka Chimonyo has died, following a long battle with cancer, the government has announced.
Chimonyo was promoted to lead the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) soon after former President late Robert Mugabe, was ousted from power in a military coup, died this morning.

The General has been unwell for a while, was last December airlifted to India for treatment.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba took to social media to break the sad news of the passing of Chimonyo
“Devastated to announce the passing on of General Chimonyo early this morning after a long fight against cancer. Go well, freedom fighter, commander and ambassador.” said Charamba.
Chimonyo becomes the fourth army general who played influential roles in the 2017 coup to die over the past two years.
The top generals who died over the past year included, Sibusiso Moyo, Perrance Shiri and Douglas Nyikayaramba all who were interred at the national center.
Details of his burial are not yet available.
Chimonyo assumed his position on the 18th of December 2018 when he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant- General by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Before he was appointed army boss he had been seconded to the Ministry of foreign affairs as Zimbabwe`s Ambassador to Tanzania from there Chimonyo then took over from General Philip Valerio Sibanda, who was promoted to be the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defense a forces (CDF).
