Zimbabwe’s pig industry emerges as key driver of livestock growth

Zimbabwe’s pig industry is recording significant growth, supported by improved genetics, modern production technologies and rising local production.

The sector’s expansion is unfolding within the framework of the Livestock Growth Plan (2021–2025), a national blueprint that prioritises improved breeding, affordable feed, biosecurity and market access across livestock value chains.

In a statement yesterday, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development ministry permanent secretary, Obert Jiri, said the pig value chain was among the country’s fastest-growing livestock sectors, with smallholder farmers increasingly benefiting from improved breeding stock and technologies.
