Zimbabwe’s AFCON co-hosting dream could become reality sooner

ZIMBABWE’s ambition to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations could receive a major boost after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee unanimously reversed its decision to stage the tournament every four years, restoring the traditional two-year cycle.

The decision could bring the proposed joint bid by Zimbabwe and South Africa into sharper focus, potentially creating an opportunity for the two countries to host the continental showpiece earlier than initially anticipated.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe had hinted at a possible review of the decision during the CAF Strategy Conference held in Cabo Verde from October 7 to 9, 2026, saying the Executive Committee would reconsider the four-year cycle introduced last year.
