ZHRC flags inhuman conditions in prisons
NewsDay Staff ·

ZIMBABWE’S Prison Correctional Services (ZPCS) is struggling to provide humane conditions for the growing number of suspects on remand, with people facing criminal charges linked to political interests among the highest not receiving bail at the courts, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has said.
According to the commission, ZPCS is overwhelmed by a ballooning number of prisoners on remand.
ZHRC chairperson, Fungai Jessie Majome, on April 29 this year led a team to conduct a human rights monitoring visit at the Harare Remand Prison to ascertain and verify facts following concerns over the prolonged detention of inmates arrested for politically sensitive cases.
