Whose interests is Zec serving?

THE announcement by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) that it has lifted the suspension on voter registration processes, but would maintain the ban on by-elections until further notice cannot escape scrutiny and begs the question: Whose interests is the electoral body serving?

Zec suspended all electoral activities in October last year shortly after Vice-President and Health and Child Care minister Constantino Chiwenga had issued a statutory instrument suspending by-elections. Both Zec and Chiwenga cited a spike in COVID-19 cases.
