A TENSE atmosphere prevailed when the country’s securocrats and the warring war veterans’ factions met under one roof in the capital yesterday to craft the agenda for their planned indaba with their patron, President Robert Mugabe, on April 7.

The meeting, chaired by Defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi, who is also secretary for war veterans in the Zanu PF politburo, was attended by Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo, State Security minister Kembo Mohadi, War Veterans minister Tshinga Dube, Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Constantine Chiwenga, Air Force of Zimbabwe Commander Air Marshal Perrance Shiri, Zimbabwe National Army Commander Lieutenant-General Phillip Valerio Sibanda, Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri and other high-ranking officials from the security sector.

The meeting brought together opposing executive members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association led by underfire chairman, Christopher Mutsvangwa and Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister Mandi Chimene, who recently declared herself the new war veterans’ leader.
