Kenyan President William Ruto has issued a heartfelt condolences message following the tragic death of controversial Zimbabwean businessman Wickell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, describing him as a “dear friend” whose commitment to the development of Africa was unwavering.
Chivayo and his wife were among six occupants who died on Wednesday evening when a helicopter crashed and caught fire in rural Marondera.
Taking to social media platform X early Thursday morning, President Ruto expressed deep sorrow over the sudden passing of the flamboyant businessman and all those who perished in the air disaster.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend, Wicknell Chivayo, together with his wife, Lucy Muteke, and the other lives lost in the helicopter crash in Zimbabwe. Their sudden departure is a painful loss to their families, friends and all who knew them,” Ruto stated.
Highlighting their personal connection, the Kenyan leader paid tribute to Chivayo’s character and pan-Africanist spirit.
“Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent,” he added.
Ruto extended his condolences to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Chivayo family, and the nation at large.
“I convey my deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives, to President Mnangagwa, the people of Zimbabwe and everyone mourning this tragic loss. May God grant Wicknell, Lucy and all those who perished eternal rest,” said Ruto.
Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths to the media, stating that the family was devastated and struggling to process the loss.
Government communications chief Nick Mangwana said there were no survivors in the crash, while civil aviation authorities and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fatal crash.
