‘Poverty impedes access to education’

Khanyile Mlotshwa ·

ACCESS to education still remains a pipe-dream for children from underprivileged communities, particularly in rural areas, says a recent survey jointly conducted by the government and civil society groups.

The survey report, Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) 2016 Rural Livelihoods Assessment, indicates that about 32% of children in the country’s rural areas were not in school due to financial constraints, followed by 24%, who were considered to be too young.

“Disability was among the reasons with the lowest frequency at 1%,” the report said.
