Mnangagwa 2037 push gathers pace

A FRESH campaign to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule to 2037 is gathering momentum within Zanu PF, with Manicaland being the latest province to back the controversial proposal — a move that is expected to intensify the succession battle in the ruling party.

The renewed push comes just weeks after Mnangagwa signed the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No 3) Act (CAA 3) into law, extending presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years and postponing the next harmonised elections from 2028 to 2030.

The constitutional changes, which also replaced direct presidential elections with election by Parliament, are being challenged in court by opponents who argue that such fundamental amendments require approval through a national referendum.
