MDC condemns court ruling on labour

Nqobile Bhebhe ·

OPPOSITION MDC has condemned the recent Supreme Court landmark judgment that granted employers the right to terminate employment on three months’ notice and without provision for retrenchment packages.

In a statement, the party’s secretary for labour and social welfare Tobias Mudzimurema said Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku’s landmark ruling last Friday was based on a flawed Labour Act, and was subject to abuse by employers.

“It is sad that in a country where unemployment rate exceeds 90% of the total population, employers have been given the green light to ill-treat the few who remain in formal employment” Mudzimurema said.
