Farmworker spared jail
NewsDay Staff ·

A 53-year-old Borrowdale farm worker, who accidentally shot a nine-year-old pupil 11 years ago after a stray bullet fired from his bore-greener-gun missed a cow and hit her, escaped an effective prison term after being convicted of attempted murder.
Gibson Karicheru of Crowhill Farm near Borrowdale Brooke was recently slapped with a 48-month-jail term after being convicted by Harare regional magistrate Sandra Mupindu.
However, Karicheru will not spend time behind bars after 30 months of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour and the remaining 18 months wholly suspended on condition he completed 630 hours of community service at Sally Mugabe Primary School.
