Etoile Sahel kicked out of Champs League

NewsDay Staff ·

CAIRO — Tunisia’s Etoile Sahel have been kicked out of the African Champions League after rioting fans caused the abandonment of a group match against compatriots Espérance earlier this month, the Confederation of African Football announced on Monday.

It is the first time a club has been expelled in the middle of the group competition despite the regular occurrence of similar incidents in the two annual African club competitions.

Etoile’s match against Espérance in Souse on August 18 had to be called off after 69 minutes after home fans invaded the pitch while others in the stadium threw an assortment of missiles, including stones, bottles and firecrackers, Caf said in a statement.
