700 000 displaced by Moza violence

REFUGEES International has warned of the possibility of an influx of refugees into Zimbabwe and other countries in the southern African region fleeing from Islamic insurgency in Mozambique.

In a statement last week, director of communications Sarah Sheffer said the raging terrorist insurgency in Mozambique had resulted in the number of internally displaced people in that country going up from 70 000 to 700 000, amid calls for the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) to intervene.

The violence in Mozambique has resulted in Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who chairs the Sadc organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation, calling for a meeting to find a solution to the terrorist attacks in northern Mozambique.
