THE Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) is pushing for a friendly match between the national team and Morocco in the June international break.

Zimbabwe are looking to make full use of the next international window by organising a high-profile friendly match as the team prepares for the next set of World Cup qualifiers in September and October as well as the Africa Cup of Nations finals to be staged in Morocco starting in December.

Despite anchoring Group C of the Caf qualifiers, the Warriors remain with a fighting chance of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Zimbabwe have four points compared to table toppers South Africa, who have amassed 13 so far.

South Africa face a three-point deduction penalty for fielding an ineligible player in their match against Lesotho, which could throw the group wide open.

Warriors coach Michael Nees remains adamant that they still have a chance of qualifying following their draw against Nigeria on Tuesday, particularly with 12 points still to play for.

The new Zifa board is planning for the June international break and following the signing of a two-year working relationship with Morocco, the Atlas Lions have emerged as the Warriors’ likely sparring partner.

The locally-based Warriors returned home yesterday, while the foreign-based players flew straight to their bases after the match against Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday in the West African nation.

The agreement signed between Zifa president Nqobile Magwizi and his Moroccan counterpart encompasses “youth and women’s football development; friendly matches for senior and youth teams (and) exchange programmes and joint events”.

Zimbabwe will face Rwanda and Lesotho in September before engaging South Africa and Benin the next month for the World Cup qualifiers.

The Morocco friendly would come in handy for Nees, whose side face Egypt, South Africa and Angola in the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.
