With less than two weeks before the South Africa Youth Championships, Triathlon Zimbabwe national team coach Pamela Fulton says she is working hard to try and fine-tune her athletes.
The event is set to take place on February 26 in Maselspoort, South Africa, and Zimbabwe will field 11 athletes in the Under 13, Under 15, boys and girls as well as the youth categories.
Triathlon Zimbabwe held an event on Sunday at Mt Pleasant Pool which helped in assessing the team’s state of preparedness.
In an interview with NewsDay Sport, Fulton said the upcoming days would be packed with a number of activities, all meant to prepare the athletes both mentally and physically.
“The team departs Harare in 10 days’ time, so for the upcoming half term, I have organised a session with an exceptional motivational speaker who I have used often to inspire the athletes,” she said.
“I have also organised a fun team-building session and a mixed team relay event, as the last session prior to packing bikes and getting ready to leave. However, yesterday was their last practice race before travelling, whereby most athletes raced a shorter distance than normal.

“This coming week they need to focus on short, sharp sessions and perfecting their transition work. This young team must travel with confidence believing in themselves, make new friends, and gain experience from racing regionally to take forward with them for the future.”
Fulton also thanked all sponsors and stakeholders for coming on board and help athletes to fulfil their dreams.
“A very big thank you to Valley Irrigation, who have very kindly sponsored the kit for the team and who came to watch the athletes race and to meet the team. The athletes are race ready for their big event come Sunday 26 February,” she said.
Fulton, along with the assistant coach Marcel Paulser and tour manager Marlise van As, will be in charge of the team.
