GERALDINE Roche’s drama production is set to premiere its new production titled Miserable at the Bulawayo Theatre.
The production is a rendition from the book Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and was directed by Khaliphile Khally Sibanda.
Sibanda, who is also GRDP’s programmes manager, told NewsDay Life & Style that the musical production would showcase what locals could do by expanding their horizons.
“The project has a Zimbabwean cast and is a collaboration of different groups from Bulawayo. Some of the groups include Yashar, Colada, Roar, Aroma, Sunduza and some individuals who auditioned,” she said.
“The aim of the production is to entertain as well as teach people about fairness at workplaces. I did this production because I love challenging my directing skills. It is one of the biggest productions from Phantom. I want to grow as a director.”
Sibanda said the production talks of a man, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who after 19 years as a prisoner for stealing a loaf of bread, is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce.
“Valjean promptly breaks parole, but later uses money from the stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison …,” she said.

“We want to showcase to people what happens between the poor and the rich. This production teaches us that despite one’s background, we should learn to respect each other and work together and learn to appreciate each other.”
